Mirena IUD: Women Fear Long-term Health Complications

Because of the concerns of long-term problems in women, the Mirena intrauterine device (IUD) is considered one of the contraceptives whose negative are being subject of debate, online reports say. Uterine perforation and pelvic inflammatory are two of the dangerous side effects caused by Mirena because they potentially cause scarring, which may lead to fertility problems, as attested by drugs.com/pro/mirena.html. These two medical conditions are regarded to be rare but serious complication caused by the device. Mirena is a hormone-releasing IUD, which is considered one of the best modern contraceptives used by women for preventing pregnancy.

Perforation of the uterus is a medical condition in which the IUD pierces through the uterine lining. There is rare but almost always potential that uterine perforation to occur during insertion. Abdominal pain, heavy bleeding, and fever are evident symptoms of uterine perforation. It may potentially cause damage to nearby organ and it may require immediate surgical intervention to remove the IUD. Scarring, which may lead to infertility, is the consequence of uterine perforation.

The second serious health complication, which may potentially cause long-term effects, is pelvic inflammatory disease (PID). The woman’s reproductive organs, such as the fallopian tubes, uterus and ovaries, may be at risk for infection. Like uterine perforation, PID almost always occurs during the insertion of the IUD. The development of PID happens when the bacteria move from the vagina or cervix into the uterus, fallopian tubes, and ovaries. The most obvious symptoms for PID includes abdominal pain, fever, and vaginal discharge with abnormal color, texture and smell. PID infections may cause scarring of the pelvic organs, potentially leading to chronic pelvic pain, ectopic pregnancy, and infertility.

Bayer Pharmaceuticals, Mirena IUD manufacturer, has received a warning letter from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) because of its misleading advertisement claims and failure to disclose the product’s potential health complications. However, a number of women have filed lawsuits against the Mirena maker and the blog on Mirena injury lawsuit helps women understand about the said birth control device. The FDA is taking a step to review to cause of the problems caused by Mirena.
